looks like a common to me. The thing with commons is they are pretty unique in their markings from one another and yours clearly shows.

Yep looks like a common. Not sure of the L number though...you can always sift thru them here...

man, isn't that the truth. PLecos are in dire need of re classifaction. Buy a common pleco and who the hell knows which particular species they are. Petsmart has that "labeled" but I very much doubt the petsmart staff goes through and countrs dorsal lines to ID them in the right place.
I have seen so many 50 dollars and up plecos sold at pet stores as "fancy plecos" and I can't justify spending that kind of money on something without at least an L number that might be a really nice looking hypo. haha
Hopefully someone is working on reclassifying the family into something better than L numbers and guesses about which one people have.

ddyer, that plec is still going to get larger. If you don't have a pond, you might not want to get another ;)
I saw a plec at a store the other day labeled as a "psychadelic" plec. Hmmmm.....Never heard of that before ;) Seems to be just laziness in looking up the real one. My boyfriend was at the same store a few weeks ago and there was a plec sitting on the counter in a baggie with an oto. A customer had brought them in and the manager told my BF he could have them. He said he didn't want to deal with it. So we got em for free. The plec I have seen labeled as a Tiger pleco elsewhere. He's pretty cool.

L number for common is L21
It looks like a common to me, i have a 8" inch one with similar patterns like that at the store. If you have a HUGE tank go for the pair but be warned if its a common its very hard to sex i think, that and very hard to breed if not impossible. I wish they would have better pleco ids too, I have seen so many different marking on "commons" it not even funny.

Heh, more than one type called a "common" too. There's hypostomus.. what you've got. There's gibbycept, and there's pugnatus.
