Hi everyone, Had set up going since 28-2-07 never had an Ammonia peak, tests seem to be as follows: ph - ranged between 8.3 and 8.5
Nitrities - 0.1 did go down to 0 but yesterday read 0.25
Nitrates - have been at highest 25 lowest 0 yesterday 10, ammonia seems to stay between <0.25 and 0.25 all tests are done using Salifert test kits, had brown algae but does seem to of slowed down, now to where i think we may have gone wrong, 17-3-07 my son brought me a clown fish, who seems fine, the next day we had three turbo snails again doing a good job, 24.3.07 we got a pom pom (xenia polyps) and two small red hermit crabs all are doing very well, on the 30-3-07 we got 5 very small blue leg hermit crabs, still no problem apart from water tests, 31.3.07 had a peppermint shrimp to try to get rid of 5 glass anemones that came with living rock, his fine but not too bothered about anemones! then big mistake we got a red marble sea star same date as shrimp he was fine at first but now the ends of his 5 legs (i know there not legs) are breaking off and look rough, from what iv read on here we,ve put too much in to tank too quick can i save the day if so how, iv done 5 or 6 10 to 20% water changes since we,ve had tank o try and bring Nitrates down to 0, please help! thanks guys

Its "legs" should grow back. You nitrates being 10 really isn't terrible. I would stick with the water changes to keep that ammonia down to 0. I'd also add things a bit slower from now on, but it looks like you're figuring that out. :)

Hi Aw

If it helps put your mind at rest my fish have been through nitrAtes -off the scale:eek: , Ammonia - off the scale:eek: , phosphates - off the scale:eek: and red slime algae:eek: . Obviously I'm not recommending others do that to their fish I'm just saying they can be tough little things and as long as your levels don't increase any more you should be OK.

I'd just ease off adding anything else for a while but you've got it under control so don't panic!!!:dance2:

PS I'm not proud of what I put my fish through just trying to put a fellow fish keepers mind at rest!!

Thanks for the help think i might move seastar into another tank on his own see if he will recover seems to be bits falling off him which im worried wont be doing my water any good, how often do you think i should do water changes? No changes in tests today, but good news zapped 3 glass anemones using advice off here - boiling water! it really works with a bit off effort. Thanks for all the help, keep it coming. :dance2:

Hello AW..Welcome to the salty sections...

You want to be looking at about 10% water change per week..Yes, if yu have somewhere else the accomodate it, then its always going to aid it...

Niko

yea the 10%s will help tons! and as was said the legs should grow back after a few molts...they won ever be exactly the same size but will get there. they can do alright with just a few legs...as long as they can eat.
sorry to hear ur having some troubles. but it will clear up just take the proper measures as stated above for the others and it will be back on trak in no time:)

Hi guys again thanks for all the help, just one other thing which may sound daft how do i know the seastar is eatting, the last two days he has stayed in the same place, before that he was moving but only on the glass and always at the top of tank, im feeding clown fish, hermits and peppermint shrimp on frozen brine shrimp and flake food. Water test the same again today least there know higher! :dance2:

look up sea star feeding position on google pictures...that will give u an idea..and if they shrink or get smaller they arnt eating. can take up to 8 months before they actually die form starvation...have u seen any decrease in size since u bought it...some unfortunately wont eat...and is why they ned very mature aquariums except a few species like the chocolate chip star.
