Hi all,

My son would like to add two threadfin rainbow fish to his 10 gallon tank. The tank has decorations that provide hiding places, one life plant and a plastic plant. It has a 20gallon whisper filter. Water is 7.2ph, 0 amonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. He has two tri color platies (both female) in there now, and plans to add either a sterba cory or an upside down catfish to it as well.
He has been looking for information and we get conflicting advise. Some say these peaceful fish go well with smaller tank mates, some say you can only keep rainbows with rainbows.
Your experience?
Thanks!

L.

they will do fine with smaller tank mates. I don't have threadfins, but I do have rainbows and they leave everyone in my tank alone (big or small). They are highly active swimming fish. They do get to be a few inches, but threadfins stay on the smaller size. Here's a decent site about rainbows. Try to find the species name of the threadfin.

I would be cautious to add rainbows to a ten gallon tank. In fact, I prolly wouldn't. They really need bigger areas to swim. but thats just me. with two platies, a cory, two rainbows. you are def filling up your stocking levels in a small 10 gallon. But its your tank... just do lots of research and be careful. Small fish get bigger!

good luck.
