Hi,
I have been given six Cichlids, which I have no idea what they are, how to care for them or how to tell if they are male or female. Please can anyone help me?
Looked at different websites but still cant identify them as there is so many fish which they could be.
Thank-you in advanced Rae15754

Geophagus Braziliensis. grows to a foot and 6 of them need 120 gallons.

definitely a geo..
and I am leaning to what liv2padl suggests..and you will need a big tank..they are very nice geo's to have tho.

a firemouth cichlid looks absolutely nothing like any Geophagus.

I can see how some people can mistake small geos with bolivian rams they kind of have that same sloped face but it is for sure a geophagus brasiliensis. google it and search images.

that's is probably why they call rams Mikrogeophagus..but the finnage on the Bolivian is colored different..

really?? Altispinosa??
I have a bunch of them and they get along very well in my tanks with angels and discus.
they did beat the heck out of the tiger barbs I originally had them in ..needless to say I gav the Barbs away.

I have never seen that match up .but given the hits that male tiger barb took..I don't doubt it. the ram hit that male so hard it hit the glass at the top of the tank.
lemme tell ya..for a peacful cichlid those bolivian rams pack quite a punch and they are fast..
I have seen blue rams beat the heck out of full grown discus tho..in that case I put money on too many rams in too small of a tank.

they are definately geophagus brasiliensis, aka "Pearl Cichlid" see Baensch Atlas volume 1.
very nice fish, and not too nasty like some of the other geos can be.
