View Full Version : wal mart plant bulbs.
i bought these plant bulbs from wal mart just to try. they are supposed to be hardy aponogeton plants, anyways its been about a week, and they havent started to sprout yet. any sugestions? should i bury them under the gravel? thanx guys
Yes, bury them and then give them plenty of time to sprout. Some take weeks, some months.

ok thanx :) i guess i never learned my lesson on trusting what they write on the box. in big print they have "just drop the bulb into the aquarium and watch them grow(6" to 8" in just 15 days)"
lol the smaller print says the guarantee is if the bulb fails to sprout within 20 days. lol alot of variations :) i will take your advice and bury them :) thanx
I got those about 8 months ago. 6 came in a package. Within 3 days, I had about 6 inch sprouts on two of them. After about 6 days 2 others had sprouted. The other two never did anything (I left them in for about a month and a half). Three of the four sprouters are still doing well... the other one puts out tiny little shoots that are only about 3-6 inches tall. For several months they even shot funny looking spiky flowers right out of the tank...kept having to lop those off.
hmm, i wonder why mine havent sprouted. did you bury yours, or do anything special?out of the 5 i have planted, none have dont anything.

Check out "My Dorm Denizens" in my sig--it took mine FOREVER to grow.
I just dropped them in. They sort of anchored themselves if I remember correctly. I moved them to where I wanted them after they sprouted. Right now two of them are completely buried and the other two are nestled down into the gravel but still visible. Doesn't seem to make a difference in my tank.

Mine did about the same buried as not buried (but I did bury them at first, and, during the gravel vacuuming process, some came to the top).

i brought them a few times, i noticed if nothing happens in a week they won't grow but you might try keeping them longer its just sometimes mine start growing white fuzz. im also in the process of mailing some of the bad ones back to try to get more. I just drop them in and they start sprouting then when their leaves start growing ill bury them about halfway down. -john

I had good luck with mine. I have a couple going for well over a year now. They did take well over a week to sprout though.

I bought four for my pond. The lillies sprouted real good and growing real fast. The other two haven't done a thing. I'm starting to think it's a 50/50 chance with bulbs from Walmart. I'm not sure though.

A note about burying them - the problem is that you might bury it with the growing point downwards, and in that case the new shoots might not make their way up and out of the gravel. I would leave them laying on top of the gravel till they sprout, then turn them the right side up and bury only the bottom half or so.
Then again, I bought an A. ulvaceus with full leaves, and I could tell that it was grown upside down because all the leaves came out the "bottom" and curved around the bulb and then vertically upwards. Also, the roots will come out of the same point as the leaves (at least in A. ulvaceus) - you should still leave it with the leaves on top, because the roots will find their way into the groud.
