What should I ask person selling tank?

Hi, just a quick intro: Quite a long time ago I had a FO salt tank (30 gal) and small seahorse tank. The biggest problem for me then was having to drive quite a ways to get live food for some of the fish and the horrible red algae that took over the 30 gal tank. Since then I've had children and gotten them through the early years. Now I've been considering getting back into the marine tank again. Especially with cool stuff like Tank bred fish, new food sources, close-by salt tank supplier and all sorts of new info I've recently learned on the forums (ie: crushed coral is BAD for your tank...who knew?)

Anyway, to the point: I found an local ad for 75 gal tenecor tank and all the stuff. It doesn't look well maintained. He has some fish, starfish, other stuff and LOTS of algae. He's asking $500. I'm thinking $200.00. I'm not sure he knows what equipment he has as he's only had the system for 6 months.

I have a few concerns. Firstly, I'm worried about the fish surviving the move as I will have to get it all set up and ammonia cycle process going again.

Questions: Is this a good deal? What should I be looking for? Should I be worried about the algae and salt build up? Any advise? Is it possible to move a tank like this without losing any of the inhabitants?

I consider myself a novice even though I've done it before, it's just that it's been a while and things have changed a bit. So, thanks for any advise!

Hello ... welcome to AC.

I just started researching SW about 3 months ago and I just got my tank a month ago today. But no one has responded to this post (that's not like this forum at all) so i'm gonna try and help the best I can.

I think that you should list the equipment this person is selling on this site and we can further help you decide it's worth. You can go out and get a 75 gallon tank and crap equipment for way less than $500. But if he has a 75 gallon tank with a stand, canopy, powerheads, skimmer, heater and lets say MH lighting then it's worth the $500 and more. I hope you see what I mean.

As far as what you should be looking for ... a list of the actual equipment. Take a pic of his tank and equipment if he doesn't know names and post it on this site.

About the fish making the move.... I would be worried about taking the fish home with you unless you had a seperate tank to host the fish while you set up the 75 gallon. Only because your gonna wanna reset the rock, maybe add different sand/substrate and what not. Also once you set the new tank up you might want to go a week or two testing the water to make sure you don't cycle again.

Don't worry about the algae and salt creep. It happens to everyone.

I'm no expert, i'm not even intermediate when it comes to SW fish tanks so don't take what I say and run with it. Wait for any of the guys on here that know exactly what they are talking about. Hope this helps.

yeah.. its best you list the parts he has that way we can calculate what its really worth... as far as the fishes, i reccommend selling them to someone or if you want to keep them then ask a store to hold them for you.

but if its fish only then 500 with eveything is ok...

a brand new 75 wth stand and canopy would for for about 200 and with sand and live rock about another 200 IF he bought the right amount and other parts/ type of filter

but posting a list is your best bet
