i've posted before to let you guys know what i went with and here is how it's going 3 weeks later:
this is my 46g with 1 jack, 1 firemouth, 1 pleco and 1 breeding pair of kribs.
i wanted to go with fish that could stand their ground and even tho both the firemouth and the jack dempsey are supposed to be quite a bit more aggresive than the kribs the kribs seem to have the upper hand. it doesn't help that they have decided to breed again - babies came out 2 days ago.
for a while everyone was hanging out on the right side by the large holey rock. now the kribs are on the left side and jack and phil ( the firemouth ) live on the right.
when they arrived and for a short while afterward jack and phil seemed like best buds. jack would follow phil all the time. phil does not seem to be ok with this anymore :(. they can still hang out next to each other without phil chasing jack away but on occasion and especially while feeding phil seems to prefer to be left alone.
everyone is healthy, no torn fins and minimal aggresion. mostly the kribs defending their territory. everyone is eating well. i've been buying different kinds of food and they love the omega one cichlid flakes and dainichi cichlid pellets veggie fx the best. they go crazy over that stuff and seem to enjoy it more than the frozen stuff. i've also bought live baby brine shrimp and even tho it's really tiny i think it's doing them good.
their colors are just improving everyday! tho i have to say that i am a bit disappointed that phil does not look like in the pics i've seen online. he has a blue glow to him but does not have the strikingly blue on the upper part of his body as all the pics i've seen show. he is still an amazingly beautiful fish but looks so much more like the fish in another posters thread ( a thread that asked to identify his 6 cichlids and i thought they looked like phil so suggested firemouth but everyone else says geo ). he is defenitly a firemouth tho because he does have the bright red throat and that big eyespot by his gills. (really the only 2 differences between phil and the pic of the cichlids identified as geos)
jack comes out so much more in the evening and comes right up to the glass to look at me. he even ventures to the left side where the kribs live without being chased away. after lights out is really when i see him most. i'm so in love with this fish!!
so i'm pretty happy with the way things are going at the moment tho my tank still has very little life in it. looks rather empty. i do think i might want to move the kribs to the 20g long that we're fixing to set up this weekend, see if phil and jack become a bit more active.
don't worry tho. no matter how empty the tank looks at the moment and even if/when i move the kribs out - i won't be adding anyone else.
thanks for reading :)......wanted to share - my excitement over the new fish and rock and overall my lovely tank has only grown!
ooh! have i mentioned that jack has also grown noticeably? it's just so exciting!!!!
