I have a 10 gallon tank that I am cycling using ammonia. I am thinking of making the tank an all invert tank, but inverts that do not need to be on land such as ghost shrimp. I was thinking of getting ghost shrimp and a mystery snail. Will this work and how many ghost shrimp can I get? If this doesn't work, what would you recommend? Thank you for the help!

i have 8 ghost shrimp in my 10g planted and their doing well. from what ive read 1 ghost shrimp per gallon for nano tanks seems to be the common answer. You could probably get away with a dozen in there

if you're going all invert, you could try this:
10 ghost shrimp
6-7 amano shrimp
12-14 cherry shrimp
1 dwarf crayfish
1 brig apple snail
1 columibian ramshorn
1 bamboo/wood shrimp

this may seem like a bit much, but inverts produce far less bioload then fish, and if it's planted you should be fine.

Its not planted and the filter is an Aquaclear 30 with the sponge, carbon, and biomax.

There are plastic plants, but no live plants.

There are plastic plants, but no live plants. do they provide thick ground cover?

I wouldn't say thick, but a good portion is covered.

you might want to start out with ghost shrimp and see how it goes. i would end up switching to something a little better. there are all kinds of shrimp and or snails you can add. i personally would stick to a single group of shrimp at a time and try breeding them.

What other inverts would be good besides ghost shrimp, and how many of them could I get.

I like that suggestion...what about chucking 4 ADFs in there too?

What other inverts would be good besides ghost shrimp, and how many of them could I get.read my first post. there are at least 13 shrimp species and 8 snail species in the pet trade that could live in there.

Your original idea of getting ghost shrimp and an apple snail would be fine. I'm sure they'd be happy in there.

I'd stick with that plan, and if you like how it turns out you can think about some other inverts (dwarf crays, the tons of other cool shrimp, etc) that might not be available locally.

I have a tank dedicated to apple snails, and another tank that houses my shrimp (although they live with fish, so that tank isn't invert-only). I find both to be an absolute joy (in fact, I like inverts way better than some fish).
