Maybe I'm an idiot, but I just dont see how you clean sand in a tank. Doesn't the vac suck it right up? I tried searching and got way too many results to comb through.

nope the gravel vac doesnt suck it up. what i do is just move it around the top of the sand. the dirt is kicked up and sucked up. very easy.

The waste just sits on top of the sand, it doesn't get trapped deeper down. So like mgamer said, use the gravel vac just above the sand (don't push it down into the substrate as you would with gravel).
