In proportion to a tank, how many angels can you keep? I'm not sure if this is a dumb thing to ask but how do you know if they successfully paired? I currently have 3. 2 seem to like swimming nearer the surface and 1 likes it near the bottom. i'm not sure if that counts as an official pairing or not...

If you have a pair and the tank is not big enough, the "odd man out" will probably be chased/nipped/beaten to death. Once paired and (especially when) spawning, they get a lot more aggressive and will tolerate nothing being near them or their eggs.

Having numerous large plants, some structure etc. to break up the lines of sight may be helpful. Angels actually require a pretty big tank as they get fairly big. I wouldn't keep a pair in anything smaller than a 30g (and it would be just the pair & some Otos/Corys if they were "paired"). Others may say you could go a little smaller, but I suspect that more would advise that a 30g is not large enough for a mated pair.

Also - I'm assuming you're talking about P. scalare, not P. altum.

it depends on the tank size on how many angels you can have in a tank.

with more angels, there is more of a possibility of creating a breeding pair.

thanks for all your replies...been observing them all day and i don't seem to detect any aggressiveness at all...basically minding their own business. i guess, there won't be no magic happenin anytime soon...
btw, what's the ideal tank size for a mated pair. i currently have them in a 30gal but have been thinking up getting a bigger tank soon...

if you want to increase the chances of mating pairs to form..add more angels..they will pair up..believe me they will pair up..
