So I got a 10 gallon yesterday and Im gonna keep it in my basement with sponge filter and attempt to make it snail paradise(not that it'll be a long stay in paradise!) My questions is since Im gonna go for the gold here, what specices of snail should I finally stick with. I've given him pond snails, ramshorn, and a few nerites in the past...but whats the best choice for a fig 8 puffer of those 3 that would be pretty easy to breed. Im also debating putting a heater in, some sources say it helps snails breed faster with warmer water, think this is true?

Agreed. My snail tank is unheated and I get better results in the summer when the house is warmer. It's just a 2 gallon tank without a heater. I keep Ramshorn and Pond Snails.

How tolerant are snails of ammonia/nitrite? Im gonna throw some in to start the cycle, do you think they'll live through it?

probably not, they are pretty sensitive IME.

my snail tank sucks  ,
5gal heated to 74f with internall filter,
no lighting just getting a bit of light from a goldfish tank next to it.
using gravel, bogwood and some various plants.
tried all sorts from meat, vegatables, fish food, cuttle fish bones etc
snails include ramshorn and pond snails but they dont seem to be breeding at all :(
never test for ammonia/nitrata etc and been topping up using RO water - think those are to blame for it :D,
must try again....

My snail tank sucks too, even though they reproduce often. For some reason, my Ramshorn snails eventually turn white(shells) and die. Can anyone tell me why? I admit that I rarely vacuum the gravel because I hate to suck up the newborns. I'm guessing this is my answer, but I'd like to know exactly why the shells are turning white and dying.
