Hi,
I set up a tank without planning to have significant plants. It is a 30g. My substrate is 1" to 3" silica sand.

I have since gone full bore into plants. However, I still have the silica sand substrate. I have some iron / potassium type root tablets to use under the swords, etc.

Is there any other way to help fortify the existing substrate without changing the look of it (color / texture) ? I've heard of Laterite balls or something like that but I'm not clear exactly what they are or what they are used for.

Thanks,
Randy

I've never heard of Laterite 'balls' for extra fertilization.

I was wrong about that laterite balls thing. What I was thinking of was deponit clay fertiliser balls. I have no idea what they are either... Anyone know?

Do a Google search on "Substrate Gold" - but I am not sure they are still in business...
