I have a Tap Water Filter and I was wondering, on the first fill up of a 125 tank, if I used the tap filter and regurlar water would this work, or do I absolutley have to now get a RO unit? Is there things that can treat the water to remove stuff.

I only want to do this on the first set up, I will have a RO unit soon.

Trouble is using tap to start with is that you are going to be filling your sand bed with nitrates and phosphates, which are going to take an age to clear through, if at all...so the potential for alage out-break is going to be high...

I would personally wait till you get the RO...

Just an opinion of course...

I tend to agree with atnixon on this... However I don't practice this myself... I have well water and have checked it several times for phosphates/nitrates etc several times and have not had a problem with them... However, when my lights get old and less effective I did get problems with diatom's (not normally a problem in mature reef's) I don't think it had as much to do with the water than it did the old lights...

I even have a RO/DI system sitting in my garage that I haven't setup (mainly no time) If I end up with a problem in my 125g I'll be setting it up with a quickness...

IME - test your tap and base your decision off of that...

YEP, get the RO unit then make it salty!!
