Fishless cycling while out of town? VT student needs quick advice.

Hey all,

I've just set up a Tetra-Fish brand 20 gallon starter aquarium set, and am now ready to begin cycling it. Due to yesterday's events at my college (Virginia Tech), I am likely to be leaving town until Sunday.

Most of the cycling guides I have read online say to add ammonia on a daily basis, could I instead give it one large spike to last it through Sunday so that the process can work while I'm out of town? If so, how large of an ammonia spike should I use?

Thanks much for your quick help, and I'm certainly open to any other advice!
Tom

If you just started this tank up and it has no bacteria yet in it then the ammonia won't be eaten up very fast at the start. I would say that 5-6ppm in a tank with no bacteria added will probably be fine until Sunday.

Ditto to what TKOS said!

Thanks guys!

I just went to my LFS and picked up a few things - among them some gravel from one of their established tanks. Hopefully, I've scored a little bacteria with it. What should I do in light of this?

Thanks again!

Sounds like you will be okay for the short time you are gone.

you can also get filter media bags at your lfs and fill it up with the gravel.

I have no idea about your cycle, but I just wanted to post and express my condolences on the recent events at VT. You have all been in my prayers, and in the prayers of our entire Southern Seminary campus community. Though we cannot fully understand the pain and struggles you are facing, we are mourning with you.

Blessings,
Eric
