About 5 months ago,I purchased four 1 1/2 inch dempseys. One started growing a lot faster than the others so i figured it to be the dominant male.About a month later he paired off with one of the others an i removed them to another tank. The more they grow, the more it seems that they are both males. Both have pointed and a little hooked anal and dorsal fins and almost identical coloration.Right now,the dominant one is about 6 inches and the other is about 5. Up until yesterday, they have been "going through the motions" of breeding.Making a large crater at the back of the tank, cleaning off a clay pot,and their mating ritual.

Now the larger one runs the other one all over the tank.

Should i move one of them to another tank or let them be?I hate for the smaller one to get hurt or worse.

Is it possible for 2 males to "pair up"?

I am really confused about this.Any help would be very much appreciated.

What was the "pairing up" behaviour? You may have misread it, as pairing off seems to be similar to beating the tar out of each other.

Yes, move them!!!

This is the first time i have seen any hostility between them. Before the would sit next to each other and do the tail wag,or cruise the tank together. They would always be together in the hole they dug. They would clean the clay pot closest to the hole. They would move up against the pot like they were laying eggs or fertilizing eggs, but there would be no eggs there.I never even seen them "lip-lock".They would also show amazing color.

They have been "together" for about 4 months.
