I just thought this was pretty weird..
I have a large red oscar, Clyde. He's probably about a foot long.
I recently purchased a few Rosie Minnows for him, as my guppy treat supply had run out. I put about a dozen in, figuring I'd take out whatever he didn't eat. He ate about 3 of them and then I left the room. I came back a few hours later and to my surprise, got splashed!
My normally very friendly fish became ferocious, slamming into the tank, trying to charge me whenever I came near. When I backed off he would go to the bottom and swim with the little Rosies.
It's been about a week now, he only ate ONE of the Rosies, (A gray one that was mixed in) He has calmed down towards me as well. Does he think they are his babies, since they are similar in color? Has anyone ever heard of this before?
It's pretty darn funny watching him trying to swim with them and I'm glad he has something to do aside from watching tv now..
