I was on liveaquaria and saw this picture on the homepage but was unable to find out what fish it is. Any ideas? It sure is beautiful: http://liveaquaria.com/images/homepage/la_cc_041307.jpg

Hiya claw, its called a Salifish Tang, or if people out there want something a little more of a name, its latin name is Zebrasoma veliferum..I know some are not interested in the latin names, but, there it is just for specifics..

I was hoping it would be a Tang ID!
I respectfully disagree with the above. It is definitely the Sohal Tang, Acanthurus sohal. They can be MEAN! They can also get over one foot long. My LFS has had one for months- he's thick and solid and gorgeous. I'd love to get him but don't want my other fishies scared to death! Every time I go in there though I watch him as he "surfs" the water. No one will buy the big guy though. Not good for him but great for me so I can stare at him every time I go there. :)

That amazes me but that site is actually wrong! I've never seen one mislabelled like that. Not trying to be a pain but I'll look for some links right now.
Zebrasoma's are the Yellow Tangs, Purple Tangs, Sailfins, Long-nosed black tangs- all with that thinner and identical body shape. The Sohal Tang is not a zebrasoma. I have a Sailfin Tang, zebrasoma desjardinii which is identical (and some believe the same) as the zebrasoma veliferum. I'm sure they just put up the wrong picture to the wrong description.

 I'm sad that hes a mean one. I think my first saltwater tank will be a live rock tank (not reef) with calm and semi-agressive species. He would just not fit in...
