I found this plant entagled with some java fern when I was transplanting from my old tank to my new one.

It has definate roots, so I decided to plant it and see if it grows. It has grown some over the past week.

Anybody know what it is?

I updated the photo. Sorry, I should have marked it.

It looks like a root system but when I planted it, the roots were very different from the plant in colour and texture. At first I thought it was java fern roots, but it pulled away too easily and now it's starting to grow, so I think it must be a plant of some kind.

Ok, as I thought. I would say it is java moss, I'm not an expert on plants that are mosses. So, yea, I would go with java moss.

That was my first guess too. I hope it is. I've been trying for a couple of years to get some, but our lfs never has any. (They said, "next week for sure"). And now there's probably some in my tank anyway.

Java moss does not have roots... are the green bits in your picture fuzzy or smooth, as they look more smooth. Java moss definitely looks more fuzzy, it has itty bitty leaves. I really don't know but in my limited knowledge of plants, the only one I have that has green stringy bits (as well as leaves) with very white roots is anubias, but those travel more on the gravel than upright. In that case, it should grow actual leaves from the rhizome. (Attaching a picture of the green on my anubias)

The green bits appear to be smooth. Interesting.....it does look similar to your photo. Perhaps not as thick, but it's hard to tell. I may just have to wait and see.
