It looks alike a very nice looking fish. I am not too familure with JD's but your picture shows some royal blue in it, is that the true color?

I'd say fairly quickly. Bear in mind that I'm counting the tail here. I got mine ~1 inch. It then grew 1" per month until it was 6". Growth rates will vary though.

I say female - based on the fact that i have a 50/50 shot of being correct.

I don't have much more experience with JDs other than the pair I had owned. So I can't make a judgement about all JDs.

At first glance it appears to be a female.
I couldn't tell you for sure, just because looks like my old female. Although the fish has pointed anal fins, they are not flowing or as long as my old male's. My male JD had a more square head and it seemed to come to less of a point. My male also had a more elongated body. haha. Im sitting here trying to think of all the differences in my head of fish I sold a while ago.

When I grew my female out, I thought she was a male. Bright colors, full bodied etc. Just like the one in the picture.
However, when I saw the male I bought for her at the lfs I knew right away he was a male and she was a female. Seeing the two next to eachother really helps.

well it took my JD about 6 months to get to this size.
i have kept him (if it is a HIM!) in a larger tank.
had good water, and feed him beefheart mix.
(mix has lots of good stuff in it, shrimp, peas, spinage etc...)

and yes it has some very dark blues.
the picture looks pretty much like the real fish.
i was told the darker the colors the better the fish is.
(happy, healthy, etc...)

LOL - ok i'm getting both male and female coming back.

how about telling me what a female should look like, and what a male should look like, and i'll look at it and guess! :)

Hey, Mojo!
any ideas on the JD?
should i get a picture from another angle?
let me know.

OH! and thanks for the pointers for the pictures.
i read your posts in the preditory fish site!
I'm getting pictures like i never have before!

Jack Dempsey sexing (http://www.aquamaniacs.net/jackdempseys.html)

Male JD's are usually larger, have less/no color on the lower part of their gill plate, usually more red in the dorsal fin, and usually more pointed dorsal and anal fin.

Females usually are smaller, more color on the gill plate, less red in the dorsal fin, and more rounded dorsal and anal fins.

Note all the "usuallys" my female has very pointed dorsal and anal fins, but all the other traits shout female.

I would definately guess ( hehe...oxymoron ) that it is a female, based on it's rounded fin and shorter less pointy dorsal fin.
