I always thought before I had discus fish, that they were extremely shy creatures. That has been far from the truth in my 55, they always come out in the front to greet me, and spend more time there then in the back where I provided plenty of tall plants. And today, while I was cleaning with the python, one of my orange panda discus was nipping at my hand and following me all around with the siphon (And yes they are well fed, not starving). Are other people's discus this social and dare I say, bold?

Discus are known for being bold. That what makes them so endearing. They should greet you at the front of the tank and even let you pet them or eat food directly out of your hands. All good sings of healthy discus. Which sounds like you already have.

Discus that are always shy or cowering in the corner could indicate there may be some health issues.

If you're at a breeder or lfs you shouldn't purchase any discuses that are hiding in the tanks. They all should be greeting you like little puppy dogs.

Like greyhound said - happy discus will come out and actually interact with you - mine all exhibit different "personalities" and I have to deal with them differently - some will eat out of my hand even. It's what's ruined every other fish for me (except angels - they are equally bold). As for begging for food - mine all do... I unwittingly stumbled into discus and am up to 12 now with a brutal case of MTS.
