Hi everyone
I went Discus hunting yesterday but ended up with angels instead - supposedly (wild caught) p. leopoldi - got a school of 6 of them. I read that they aren't the most common angel in the trade, so would it be possible to tell from the pic if they are indeed Pterophyllum leopoldi? Thanks
S

those look like leopoldis to me. i havent seen any in my area in about a year and a half now. great find. they stay smaller than scalare and altum, only reaching aorund 4 inches. they are sometimes confused with scalare, but those are indeed leos.

Thanks for the identification :) I feel kind abad sticking them in a bare-bottom tank - I mean my other angels I've had since a couple of weeks after they were born and the breeder raised them sans-gravel - so they couldn't identify a plant if their lives depended on it... Maybe this is the motivation I need to attempt a planted tank

Whe I was originall into the hobby about 20 years ago I bred p. eimeki, they kinda look like them too - its the curvature of the dorsal

eimeki hasnt been imported in a while, but partly because some scientist believe it is just scalare.

Sorry for the silly question - but what's p. eimkei? I thought there were only 3 kinds of angels? scalare, leopoldi and altum - but my uncle's got a book that shows p. dumerili (sp?).
The black-skirt are from a school of 5 that I bought to test if my fishless-cycle was indeed over - they used to live with the discus and almost out-ate them. Is it natural for them to get that size?

Dumerilii is former name for leopoldi. Lovely leos there.:)

at this point in time there are only the three.
Scalare,Altum and Leopoldi.
The Dumerilii have been classed as Leopoldi and also classed as Scalare.
Leopoldi's are aggressive..I believe they have been considered by some as the most aggressive of the angels.
I have seen them feed and they are not shy when it comes to food.
they are the smallest and many times sold as Scalare..but they are not scalre.
if they color up nicely they can take the colors similar to the altums..very pretty angel when it does.
nice find.
post more pics..

You reckon I should not keep them with 3 of my scalare? I haven't decided where to put them - so they're in with a bunch of other fish till i can sort them out... I guess if they're agressive putting them in with pregnant mollies is like sticking them in an all-u-can-eat buffet - lol!
Will get close up pics of them when my bro comes home - he's got one of those image stabilized cams that get the pics all nice and properly

if these are indeed wild caught..quarantine them at least 1 month..
I would treat for internal parasites.
I have seen Leopoldi's in with scalare..but have a large tank..
I friend of mine has three in with wild scalare and they do fine..but the tank is a 120g.
with lots of driftwood and plants.

They've been quarantined since late Jan... the guy I got them off has had them for a while - started off with 12 and sold a few of them off - I wanted them as a school and didn't have the $200 he wanted for them at the time, then the tank-space - I'd go see them every couple of weeks and hope there were some left till I finally took the plunge.

You will enjoy them..I have wild Peruvian Scalare..they act differently than the domestics.
check with the guy who had them and see if they were treated ..
I typically will treat fish for parasites during they Quarantine ...
saves problems when they are introduced to the main tank.

LOL..they should be okay with the scalare but you will need to keep an eye on them.
they tend to be aggressive feeders and may out compete other fish(little pigs)'
they are a great , tough little angel..
I could have picked some up this year but I don't have the room..too many wild peruvians..
