what is the smallest heater you can buy cuz i got a 2 gallon hex with opnly a ramshorn snail in it and its non-heated(i dont even have the filter running cuz whats the snail gonna eat then?)so i leave the light on hoping for a little warm up and a little algae for the lil bugger to eat....right now its 55 degrees farenheit and I do not think it should be that cold for him...he still is active and eats the spongy betta bits i put in there(he likes them...but what else can i feed him?)So is there a heater i can get for him or do i need one?

You would normally use a 25 watt heater in this case, but you might get away with a 50 watt heater with a good thermostat. I have a quarantine tank 2 and 1/2 gal with a 50 watt heater and it is rock solid at 78F.
good luck

If you can find a 25w, it shouldn't be more than $10 or $12.
I don't see many 25w heaters anymore though...mostly 50 watt'ers.

Hi, Arctic Fishery !
I'm going to move this thread over to General FW for more responses since this is not directly a Newbie question ! :)
i'm not sure ramshorns need heat, pond snails i am pretty sure don't. maybe try www.applesnail.net and see if they have any info. i also don't remember seeing 25 watt heaters at all, and 50 watts seems like alot.
maybe try putting it closer to a heating source for the room? definately try to keep it away from drafty windows.
how cold is the room? 55 seems low and the water temperature shouldn't vary alot from room temps.

I have a 25 watt heater for a 3 gallon tank that I had a few years ago. The heater was like $5 or $6, very cheap and very good.

Just go to a few different places first and see what the best deal is.

those sort of heater that looks like a thin black tube unlike the average one.
if you have a columbian rams horn snail(Marisa).
check:
http://www.applesnail.net/content/marisa.htm
then they require a tank temp above 54 degrees farenheight but would prefer it warmer. if you have a marisa it will eat other things besiges algae(veggies, meaty foods). mine actually prefered meaty foods over veggies and algae.
you said you weren't running a filter. snails will eventually sucum to toxic ammonia and nitrite, although not as fast as fish, so keep this in mind.
good luck with the snail:)

The room where you have this 2-gallon hex must be unusually chilly. If you light the tank with a desklamp shining down onto it, that will warm it a little.
Such small desk aquaria look best if you can get away without a heater in there...

1st your snail does not eat its own waste, so start the filter. You need to feed it occasionally, an algae wafer, some rommaine lettuce, spinach, something.
Alot of snails don't need heat, they will survive nicely at room temp, though 55 is a little low, aren't you cold??
I have only been able to find the 25 watt heaters online at petwarehouse.com
