I was just at the Gulf Coast of Alabama this past week. The sand dollars were everywhere. Living ones at the sand bar and dead ones on the beach. I had this thought since the dead ones are very porous and are basically just calcium that they would be great rubble for my middle chamber in my BioCube 14.
I already had this chamber about 1/2 full of LR rubble. I washed the sand dollar pieces that I broke into 1.5 " pieces +/- in tapwater to remove the bulk of the sand, etc. I then boiled some RO water and put the pieces in for 5 minutes. I then washed with cool RO water until I was getting basically clear water. I then let soak in saltwater for 15 minutes while stirring to release any trapped air. Then I placed it in the middle chamber.
The question is: was this stupid or genius?
