i have 2 oscars, as well as 2 convict cichlids and i just noticed one of my oscars has tail rot. what was this caused from? what can i do to cure it and make it not spread to my other fish? i read some posts on here to do water changes so i am doing a water change right now, how often should i do water changes? i have a 55G tank, all of my fish are small

If simply damaged fins, clean water is the best method to help nature heal itself and to prevent a secondary infect. I would suggest daily water changes (WCs) of about 10-20% w/ vacs (Basically use the vac to clean all of the gravel and whatever that is, is what I generally do in these situations).

If fungal (check here for ID: http://www.fishpalace.org/Disease.html#Finrot), a fungus med may be the prefered method by most.

Welcome to AC BTW ;)

I'm sorry ..did I miss something?

I don't see mention of water parameters..I don't think at this point we can assume the tank is not cycled.

however, fin/tailrot is usually associated with something off in the water(not always the case)
can you post the water paramters?

that was a bit of a sudden comment - do you know something that hasn't been shared yet?
