I hvae a 29 gal bow front sw tank now and am going to upgrade to a 55gal in the next couple of months. On my 29 now I have a coral life 65 watt light strip. I was wondering if I put that on the one half of my tank if it would be enough to have corals on that side. I know 65 watts isn't enough for the whole tank, but if I can have it on half the tank would it be enough to get some "basic" corals to flourish on that side at least.
I figured I can put the live rock built up on that side and have some corals on it......

I have a set up similar to what you proposed. My 96 w set up is only 20" long, over a 3 foot tank, so the sides are dark, with the light more or less centered. On something as tall as a 55 you'll want to move the corals up as high as you can without causing an avalanche (could always use silicon). I'm not too experienced with corals yet, but you'll more than likely have to stick with mushrooms (Discoma). Otherwise, yeah, 1/2 of the tank lit up is fine if you don't care about uneven lighting. The fish won't care, other than you may have some shyer ones stay on the dark side.

Thanks for the advice. I plan on having a regular lighting strip on the other side (15 watts) so it won't be completely dark, just not enough to keep corals I know....
