What is a metal hailde ballast used for?

increasing the power that comes out of your wall so that it is sufficent to light and run a metal halide bulb.

Very basic info. not detailed if you would like I can go into more depth.

if i were to run 2x250W Metal halides for a 55 would i need one?

JoJo's the one for this, hopefully will correct me if i am wrong, each metal halides has its own ballast..So, if you were running 2 x 250w MH lights, you would also have two ballasts...

now i see that some ballasts have "duel socket" if im running 2x250W MH could i just get one of those instead and put it on a timer?
