The old dempsey I had never showed much blue coloration. Nor did he show reds. I lost interest and got rid of him.

I keep reading about a different variety of Dempseys called the "Electric Blue Dempsey". Do any of you have any experience with this fish? Are they beautiful and colorful?

I have never kept it but its coloration is great...

I've seen one in a Family Owned petstore and I walked by the Tank. And it caught my, this was a great fish, the light shined it giving it a sparkling effect which was astonishing. But the price of the fish was steep. If you want a colorful fish get one of these.

read up on them before you buy one though. they can be very sickly and can be very very expensive! so, in most peoples experience, it can be a very pretty, expensive flush of the toilet :(

I hate doing this to you, FishNMusic, but I respectfully disagree here. There are some really colourful C/As that are not extremely genetically weak--Herichthys carpinte, and its 'Escondido' variant, are colourful and hardy, among many, many others.

I say C/A or CA to indicate Central American. I'll put that on my list of things to change on my website.

The only other fish that interest me right now is the paratilapia polleni. They're way more expensive than any dempsey I could possibly imagine. I'm mildly interested in the Blue Dempseys, just from their pictures mind you. I have yet to see one.

I went through the threads from a week ago on this same topic. Strange. The regular Dempseys are very hardy fish. It's hard to imagine this variety being much less hardy. Are they found that way naturally in wild, or are they bred that way? I'm sure the problem could be worked out eventually in later generations.

Are the blues "designer fishes" or are they a natural variety of the common dempseys? Can anyone point me to an article or link to more info.

Thanks again.

they are dempseys with a recessive blue gene. in theory, you could breed them yourself. but keep in mind, although they are beautiful, they supposidly have very very weak immune systems. just read up on these as much as you can :(

Not necessarilly true. Polleni's are not all that expensive. In fact some of breeders I deal with sell them for quite cheap.

They are however very nice fish. It was a sad day when my female died.
I almost got myself a huge breeding pair (male 9 inches, female 7 inches) at a fish auction a few weeks back. I had to leave before they came up and only sold for $68 Canadian.

Caz: to breed the blues yourself yes it's possible but you will neeed quite a bit of time and money. The reason the are so weak to begin with is that they were originally inbred so many times to get the color the genetics just are really weak.

One of the formost experts IMO about this fish is Jeff Rapps of tangledupincichlids.com He is the man when it comes to these fish. He knows them, he sells them.

Check out this posting from Mojo's site. It was quite an informative discussion including Mr.Rapps and some other excellent cichlid people. It's long but worth the read.
