I have noticed, that while petco sells small, small medium and large graded angels, almost every other store i have been too sells only angels graded as medium or large. is there a reason that most stores only sell the larger angels and how much age differnce is between the sizes?

With plenty of space and proper nutrition and environment, they grow FAST! Age is difficult at times due to this.

However, farm raised, and most breeders will crowd them thus they will grow slower unless fed hormones...

My LFS sells "Ultra-Large" for less than there mediums b/c they are returned angels that have aged and grown large. I would suspect that many stores stock mediums and up b/c they are hardier and worth more. Petco is looking for volume IMO.

odd how the lfs grades them by size.
breeders grade them differently..and you won't see the top grade angels at an LFS

if you want quality angels..find a breeder.

I agree with star. IMO, grading them from small, medium, and large is a bit conceiving to the amateur fish keeper too, perhaps bringing them to believe that these are the sizes of the angels maturely.... I say if you're looking, try a breeder first for quality fish.

a very large fish, around 6 inches, is usually around 2 or more years old.

if it is 1 inch or less, the angel will probably be a couple of months old.

neother one of these are great at showing the quality of the fish. i have seen angels that were the size of a nickel going for the same price as an angel that was 4 inches long, almost $15. i have also seen a 3 inch and 6 inch specimine going for the same price. if you want to look for a qality fish, look for long, tall, unnipped fins.

although not an indicator of health, are smaller angels more fragile or have a decreased survival rate by being sold small? are larger angels in general a better buy then a smaller angel if the quality is the same?

not always.I have seen some pretty tough young angels that can adapt to varying circumstances..
I have seen fry survive cross country trips..but in general the adults tend to do better.

then again much has to do with the breed stock and how well they were kept .
larger angels may be less adept at adapting to changing environments.

if the quality was the same, there would be no difference. I believe it depends on the adaptability of the fish which depends from fish to fish. If it's a good quality, no matter what, it should be able to adapt to your settings given the way of acclimation.
