Hi,
Does anyone know where to get sand that will work well?
I read the post about the crushed coral, I'm in the process of removing mine by siphoning it out with water changes.
I've heard that southdown is good, but I can't find it anywhere.
Is live sand really worth it?
Also my tank has been established about 9 months and is doing well except for purple algae which is everywhere, my nitrates are 20, and phosphates are 2.0, my tap water tested with zero of both.
I've been doing water changes regurally, I'm guessing the crushed coral is causing this, does this sound correct?

in answer to your other questions, yes, it could be down to the crushed coral as it has a bad habit of trapping detrius and food, raising nitrates and phosphates..water changes will help to lower nitrates and maybe concider buying some phosphate removal media to get them phosphates down to zero..

Live sand is not really worth it no. Yes, it does have "some" bacteria in the bag, this is not really going to be anywhere good enough to liven up the sandbed...so, in my opinion, a waste of money...

Yeah coral seems to catch everything,
I've been looking online, I've heard that tropical play sand is good, you can get it at Home depot for $5
I don't have much $ to spend and I need about 100 pounds
I've heard brands like Yardright & southdown
and to do the vinegar test.
Has anyone used this?
 
I want at least an inch of sand, so that would be about 80 lbs
I checked the link suggested, it looks great, I just wanted to save some money by buying it cheap.
I can't believe, I did a test order, for 90 lbs of sand they charged 10.99 for delivery.
That seems too good to be true.
Is there any type of sand that I can buy from a hardware store that will be very cheap buy work well?
 
one thing not to do with marine systems, i am afraid, is do it cheap..the chance of the tank crashing on you does not bear thinking about...It will be worth spending the extra money...
