View Full Version : Tank Mates For Mbunas

I am looking for something to make my tank appealing by expanding the variety of fish in it. The tank as of now has Malawi Mbuna Cichlids that are moderately aggressive and the pH is about 8-8.2. i am really looking for anything even a snail or algae eater but i want it to be able to tolerate the pH. Thanks in advance for your help. also the tank is 55 gallons

synodontis catfish would be a nice addition to your tank and I believe are found in the lake and commonly kept with Mbuna. They would occupy the bottom level of your tank. Here's a link : http://badmanstropicalfish.com/syn_catfish.html
some people also have good results with a bristlenose plec, notwithstanding the different ideal water parameters for that species, where the plec is properly acclimatised. I think this is believed to work better where the Mbuna and the Plec are introduced to the tank at the same time and early in life. You also hear horrible stories of the plec having its eyes picked out.
I would go with a Syno cat. They are from to same area, and can hold their own with just about any cichlid.

Our syno. cat holds his own with all the cichlids we have. And there are alot of hiding places for him. No one bothers him.....

Red Tail Sharks work really well with these types of cichlids if you can find one anywhere from 3-6 inches to put in there. In some cases the RTBS might even chase your cichlids:) Mine regularly chases my Jack Dempsey and my Jewel cichlids:) Almost forgot though only one shark unless your tank is really big, they will not tolorate their own kind.
