I went to my LFS today looking for a female German Blue Ram. I thought that if one had a pink belly it meant it was a female. I only saw one that I thought for sure had a really pink belly but it had the long, black top fin which I thought only the males had. Could this have been a female? Also are there any other ways of telling the difference between the males and females?

Thanks

That is one of the sites that is causing my confusion. It says males have a taller ray on the first dorsal fin which this one had, but it also says females have the red belly which this one also had. =) I just dont want to end up with 2 males.

In my experience, dorsal fin length is not a reliable indicator of gender.

I'd go with the pink belly.

I'll second that. I have a male blue ram right now with a much smaller dorsal ray than the female. I was under the impression that this was due to dominance, I'm assuming that when he gets bigger he'll be in charge and his dorsal ray will grow.

Along with the pink belly, look out for bright "spangles" in and/or around the main black spot. They're pretty unmissable. The female will also be a totally different shape to the male...Much rounder on the bottom. They're kind of stumpy. Cute, but stumpy :D

Some asian breeders jack the rams up with hormones to help brighten colors... I've heard that can throw of gender ID in some cases.

Pink belly is a female 100%
