I bought 2 small koi angels on Saturday, they're currently waiting it out in my 12g QT.

Questions:

1. How long do I have to keep them in QT?

2. I have a 46g bowfront (see sig). How many angels should I have? The LFS guy said they should be in even #s so they can pair up. I was thinking of getting 1 or 2 more. Don't know if they'll fit.

I'll post pics tomorrow night!

i would keep them in QT a minimum of 2 weeks to ensure there is absolutely nothing wrong with them. :)

what else do you have in the tank? from everything i've read, a pair of angels is not what you want if you want a peaceful tank with more then the pair.

2 weeks!? That's like TORTURE!!!

I've got a couple of dwarf gouramis, a couple of platies, 3 ottos, 1 botia striata (will be getting 2 more) and 1 dwarf chain loach (will be getting 2-3 more). From what I've heard the angels should be fine with this mix.

I don't HAVE to have any more angels, I just think it would be nice to have 1 or 2 more. If it's a bad idea I won't get anymore. Never had angels before.

Will my 46g be fully stocked when I get my extra loaches and put the 2 angels in, or will I still have room for more? I'm thinking I'll be done.

I was only going to wait 1 week, but I guess I'll wait 2.

You'd think I'd know better, after I had a fungus outbreak from not QTing some neons a while back. Almost everything died.

So what about having 3 or 4 angels rather than 2? Good idea or not?

2 Dwarf G's
2 Platties
3 Ottos
1 Botia St
1 Dwarf Chain Loach
-------------------
9 Total Current Fish

2 Botia St
2 Chain Loaches
2 Angel Fishes
-----------------
6 Future fishiess..

Projected count 15 total fish.

IMO that is just a tad overstocked, with just two angel fishes, one could end up bullying the other or even kill it. Unless you're lucky enough to end up with a pair. If you get 6 angelfishes it doesn't necessarily mean you'll end up with 3 pairs. Angels look good in bunches I think you should pick up 4-6 of them. So what this means is you might need to cut down on your other future purchases. From a personal preference I like to see groups of fish occupying the mid-level area of the tank especially if they like to be in a group.

Bravo for QT'ing your angel. You certainly don't want to take chances. Me I QT my fish for 4 wks. After that I bring in a sacrificial lamb and let them live together for another 2 weeks. If both fishies are ok, I introduce them back to the main tank. This is another reason why you should get fishes in bunches. You can QT everyone at the same time.

PS..how's that Fluval treating ya'?? ;)

I agree to a point with greyhoundfan.

but 2 angels in a community tank (domestic angels) will probably be fine.

adding more angels may look great but will dramatically raise the probability of angels pairing up..then the 48 won't be big enough for the rest of the fish as the pair would most likely stake out at least half of the tank.
you already have the angels so please rethink the additional fish .
I qt my angels a minimum of 4 weeks..angels have been prone to internal infestations and it takes some time to get them to show up..usually triggered by stress.

Hold on a second. And forgive my ignorance -

WHAT happens when angels pair up??? They dominate the tank? I thought it just meant they were in love and happy!!!

So if I got a bunch of angels, and they paired up, it would basically be a nightmare for the other fish in the tank? I've never owned angels before, so I just thought that 'pairing up' meant that they were happy.

So I should just keep it with 2 then or maybe get rid of some of my other fish.

They will defend their territory and most often, try to stretch the boundaries and eventually dominate the whole tank.;)

Yes.

Get rid of the others once you got the pair.

Well, then I hope the ones I have do not decide to pair up!
