What is this and how do I get rid of it. It is killing my plants and the snails don't seem to be making any difference. i have 3 zebra apples and just added 4 blue apples today.

That's java moss.
Seriously, though, the two moss pics look mostly like it's just detritus that has settled in the moss. The tip of the fern appears to have a little hair algae growing on it, the brown stuff is roots from a baby plant forming on the underside of the leaf.

I was just thinking the same thing, and I have had a boat load of algae( all kinds). I agree, I think its for the most part decaying plant matter and detritus.

Thank you! I took everything apart and cleaned out the moss, got rid of the plants that weren't doing too good, and it seems better.

I don't know anything about apple snails, but I've been singing the praises of my new cherry shrimp. They have done a great job of cleaning all of the debris out of my big mass of Java Moss in the tank I have them in.
I agree with the others, that is what my Java Moss looked like before I added CO2 and thinned it out a bit. Java Moss is cool when it is healthy and spreading out, but looks nasty when it isn't.
