Does anybody know what might be causing a rusty colored algae to be forming within my tank. I'm coming from a freshwater background and used to solve algae problems with a good clean, letting my pleco's do the rest. I'm still new to brackish fish. My tank is full of juvies right now so I have the water at 1.005. Would increasing the salinity kill this stuff off?...Could it be caused by to much direct sunlight hit my tank during the day? This "growth" didn't start until I switched my stone gravel for a fine grain substrate. Any help would be great...before this stuff takes over my tank.

Direct sunlight would be the major cause.

Yeah limit sunlight, and avoid overfeeding as the left over nutrients help the algae flourish (if you are overfeeding). Other then that, there isn't much to do besides manually scraping it away. I have some in my tank but dont mind it. I dont know of any brackish plecos, but maybe some snails would help?

Unfortunately I think snails are out as I have a couple puffers in there that would probably make short work of them...I'll try the scrapping route for awhile and move the tank to a limited sunlight area.

Thanks
