Ive been doing some research on angel fish, and I have a spare 20 gallon i'm going to be setting up soon. Some sites say 20 gallon is perfect for a pair of angels, others say 40 gallon minimum?
Any body on here had any luck with angels in a standard 20 gallon? Or is this just a really bad idea?
Thanks!

I prefer a minimum of 40 for a pair. The 20 may be fine for a small1" pair for a very limited growout. But they grow fast.

20 gallons is often used for temporary measures only such as breeding purposes, not on long-term basis, Firebelly_girl.:)

I keep one angel in a 29 gallon, and that is the minimum that I would recommend.

I would recommend a 29 for a pair..enough room for them to swim, grow and spawn . the 29 is taller than the 30 the 30 is longer(angels need the height.)
best would be a 40 but not necessary.

OK thank you all =)
Do you guys have any other type of suggestion on fish that can live in a 20 gallon? Just not with the large height like angels?

rams, apisto's other dwarf cichlids ...if you are looking for cichlids.

while these fish stay relatively small..they would most likely be to large for a 20.
the firemouth will need more swimming room and would benefit with a larger tank(29-40 g)
a pair of convicts would need more room than a 20 can provide and do better in a 30 or larger.

I am aware of some angel breeders who actually spawn angels in 10 gal tanks. I have spoken with people I trust who have actually seen this.

The thing about using a smaller space for spawning paired angels it that it takes a much more stringent maint. routine to pull off.

how many could you happily fit into a 55g?

I have two pair in a 55; happy, spawning every two weeks.

Now if I can get them to stop eating the babies!

I took the eggs from their first spawn and raised them in a 10 gallon. Only 6 survived, are now an inch in diameter body size (2-3 months old). God-daughter is getting them

yes it can be done..but there are limitations..most of the breeders I know use larger tanks as they are trying to keep the pair comfortable and parent raise the fry..they also only use sponge filters and do daily water changes with controlled water.
others may use the 10 to allow the parents to spawn then remove the pair shortly after the spawn.

in reality a 10 is too small to house adult angels for any length of time.

actual spawning pairs? 2

in a commmunity set up you could keep 5-6 angels until they spawn.

and then become too territorial?

spawning pair will become territorial.

outside of that you only need to deal with issues that come from the pecking order.

I can always tell when mine have spawned; mom & dad will be guarding their side of the tank, woe behold any fishie who dares swim nearby!

Most of the time all is peaceful and serene. One pair stays one side, the other pair the other side. At times they will meet in the middle and do some threat posturing (sudden dashes at the interlopers), nothing serious...
