Do you need a protein skimmer in a fish only tank with no corals?

Do you mean in the 55gal in your sig?

That's way too small for a p.puffer (18") even if it was by itself. 90gal absolute min. Most will say 125gal.

my skimmer was crap so I took it out. Without the skimmer, it's the same with, I always have 0 everything, Ph 8.1. I just do weekly water changes.

If you get a decent one, they will really improve your water quality and cut down on nitrates. For a 55, I'd get a Coralife Super Skimmer.

yea might fight...
i say skimmers are needed with heavy feeding or bioloads...but can be done without and seems to have some wonderful advantages to not having one...but to start off i recommend a skimmer.
