HI all,:help:

Well, I have an 80 gallon discus tank with an Eheim 2028 but I just have not figured out how to clean these hoses yet!!!! Believe me, it's way overdue!!! The tank is only 3 months old, if that, but discus produce a very thick mucus which attaches itself to everything and really makes cleaning necessary... Is there a way you can disconnect the hoses and clean them??????? Supposedly there is, I just don't know how. The manual is absolutely unclear, and the English version is obviously a translation so .....:(:(:(:(
Any suggestions are more than welcome!!!!!!!

Thanks guys,
Sophie (discus lover)

Welcome to AC! :)

You will need to dissconnect the hoses. I would suggest baking soda and warm water; or you could not fool around and use bleach, but be sure to rinse very well!

The hose should be attached through a compression coupling (screws on). If it is the non-screwon, try pushing the outter ring down (towards the canister - away from the tube) and pull on the tube at the same time.

I'll grab a pic of it if I can. I'm assuming your canister the same as my buds, not sure on his model.

Okay I stole DarkSoul's picture, but does it look like this? Or are we talking 2 different things here?

I cover one end, fill the hoses with bleach water, soak about 1 hour, rinse very very well, squeeky clean......

Try a hose brush. It's a circular brush attached to a long heavy gauge monofiliment line. You thread the line through the hose and pull the brush though.

I have kept dicus for years and never seen thick mucus on anything????? Sounds like a problem not something natural.

i never seen anything think in my hoses. i would clean it with bleach and then add a lot of dechlorinator.

i do get some odd mungus that grows in my tubes occasionally.. i just go through, squeezing the lines until it all breaks loose from the water pressure and flexing.. the fish love munching on it, and whats left gets sucked up by the filter again or the gravel vac later.

if you must have them squeaky clean, get yourself a pipe cleaner like mentioned above and drag it through with a line.

The ProII's use a single quick disconnect module for both hoses (both hoses in one piece). You might be able to clean the hoses without removing them from the quick disconnect module, not sure. If you have to there is just one snap on peice if I remember right that locks them down. If you dont want to potentially make a big mess you'll want to drain the hoses before removing them. Not sure if there is a written procedure to do this but what I would do is drain the filter about half way or so (with the hoses disconnected), then unscrew the caps of the over the tank part of the hoses (to break the siphon) then recconect the hoses and let them drain back into the canister. And tilt the spraybar so it drains when you start to pull it out of the water. Then you should be able to remove the hoses empty. Not sure if there is easier way or not.

I forgot, you'll probably have to take the hoses off the quick disconnect module since when you unhook the module it locks the ball valves shut on both lines so you wouldnt be able to run water or a brush through.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for so many replies....I will try and let you know how I make out. From the 5 tanks I keep, I have never seen a tank that does not have some stuff in the hoses at some point....unless you are using R/O water which I am not as I invested a small fortune on this discus tank.... Just the fish alone.... No more money left!!! I will keep you updated....:girl:

I havent gotten any visible crud in my Eheim hoses yet (been running a few months) but since they are green its tougher to tell. On my semi clear XP3 hoses I have a lot of brown and green spots visible around the end of the hoses at the top of the tank. They get it their since the light from the tank hits the upper foot or so of the hoses. I've not ever cleaned them out btu probably should. Its been running a year and few months.

except that all you have to do is flip that little red tab in the middle, and voila! ball valves are open. ;)

I use a brush I got at the LFS. I connected a straightened out coat hanger to it so it would reach at least half the lenght of the hose. Obviously you have to clean from both ends and flush with clean water. It is amazing how a little bit of gunk on the walls of hoses can affect water flow.

fishing line, egg sinker and a swivel along with an old t-shirt. You can also get same diameter hoses at local hardware store made from vinyl but they are clear, that is what i do.

Cool tip. I took a quick look at my XP3 the other day and couldnt really see how to defeat the safety lock, but I hadnt really looked at my 2026 in much detail.

Nice easy DIY design, much like what I use to clean my muzzleloader. As far as the hose goes, I often have thought it'd be better to have opaque tubes so light would cause algae to grow in there.
