the first pix on your 3rd reply looks very similar to an ob peacock
and the first pix on your first reply looks like and ob also.......not sure.....ob peacocks are hybrids and they come in quite a different array of blotches....but the 2nd pix of your 3rd reply is kind of hard to tell with a front shot of the cichlid

here is a link to pix of the fish you have. they could very well be OB peacocks. We have 2 and can't wait for them to get their color....the fish look exactly like the ones in the link that I pasted here for you. Orange Marmalade Peacock Cichlids............

the 'blotched' fish in question are OB Peacocks. they do not NOT look anything like electric blue dempseys. neither does the darker fish look anything like a moori 'except for the mouth'. isn't that much like saying it looks like an african knifefish except for the mouth, color, shape and etc? it looks much like Copadichromis borleyi.

I have 3 of these guys and most of what that website is true but mine are alot more aggressive. I have one peacock male and they are giving him a rough time. Considering rehoming them even though I love their color. The dark guys look like some sort of peacock with their stripes but have the red on their sides. Wish lfs would have game more info.

The only ones that really have the egg spots are the males in cichlids..males have larger egg spots and females have maybe one or two very small ones...

I think that is him. But no noticable egg spots. Female maybe? I have 2 both are somewhat aggressive toward my peacock male.

Aggression This is an unpleasant characteristic of the African cichlids from Lake Malawi. Almost all species are territorial and most of them intolerant of (at least) their own species. In the limited space of the aquarium it is not advisable to have more than one male from species like Melanochromis, some Pseudotropheus, Nimbochromis, Protomelas and many others, unless a very big tank is available (more than 1.000 liters). In some very aggressive species even the females show a territorial behavior (Melanochromis auratus and Melanochromis chipokae are characteristic examples). Sometimes, the aggression of the male is directed against any similarly colored fish (especially between Aulonocara species).
Some ways to reduce aggression in the context of the aquarium are a) the use of dither fish or b)an overcrowded aquarium. The dither fish is quick fish that can become the target of the aggression of cichlids but can escape because of their speed. The overcrowded tank is based on the theory that when too many fishes are in the same tank no territories can be established therefore aggression is minimized. Generally speaking it is a good advice to carefully select the fish you plan to put in your tank. Aggressive fish should be kept with fish of similar temperament or larger species that can defend themselves. Another point to consider is that latest additions will have a much harder time finding their place in your tank so they better be the most aggressive species you plan to keep. Adding the fish just before lights go off is a good alternative. For the newcomers to these cichlids it should be noted that aggression doesn't mean just chasing around the tank; it means killing the intruder.

here is the site you can get alot of info about aggression...and the egg spots don't really start to really show until the cichlids get about 3-5 inches. Is your cichlid that size yet? Males are always more colorful than the femalesl. Females are a drab brownish with the vertical black stripes...
I would suggest rearranging the furniture:) in your tank so that the cichlids can re-establish territories....But if the one is still being picked on you can either put him in a different tank or give him back to the LFS. The latter being the best way to go.....:)

They are close to that now. I also have female in the tank just wasn't sure if thses female species would look different. The spotted ones and these guys chase each other around alot but no nipping. Should I just suck it up and get rid of all 5 of them?

They always suggest 1 male to a few females... Our males always chase each other around, but no fin ripping. Our Red Zebra is ALWAYS chasing the others, it thinks it owns the tank :mad2:. But what I would suggest is take the 5 cichlids back to the LFS and have them sex the cichlids for you and keep 1 male and 2 female. The LFS will vent the fish or just look at the dorsal fin on top of the cichlids (male=pointed at the end, female=rounded). The really best way to tell the sex is to vent the cichlids (turning them over and looking at the anal and pelvic shoots:eek: ,only word I can come up with), and then take back home the ones you want to keep. That would be the best bet for ya.....But it is up to you...If you feel you don't want to see the poor cichlid being picked on just take that one back. :dance2:

I agree with padl. After iding my fish ive spent long hours studying african cichlid pics and lit. The two are definately some sort of ob peacock and the third is probably some sort of hybrid. If you didn't buy them from a breeder then it is really hard to tell the exact species due to hybridization. where did you get the fish? that question might be most helpful in iding your fish positively.
