I would avoid the pots and shells. Peter Scott's book, The Complete Aquarium gave suggestions on how to landscape for the various types of fishes that we might encounter in the hobby. He basically tried to replicate their natural habitat in appearance. For your cichlids, you can try the African Floodplain setting. Here, Scott used aquarium peat as the substrate. The centerpiece of the tank being a large, hollowed out cork bark. For fishes, he chose killifish. Kribensis would look great in the dark, brown stained waters.

Or you could use the "Zaire River Rapids" setting. You could decrease the current to suit your Kribs. In this tank, he used a mixture of sand, fine gravel, pebbles, and pea gravel for the substrate. The main decoration being large, round river stones. He used Anubias for plants. Make sure your tank can handle the weight of the large stones.
