Hey, I am building a pond in our backyard and I was wondering if you guys could help me get a good "big picture" of what I will need and what not. I am planning on making a kidney shaped pool. I want it to be about 3 ft deep all around and about 7 ft or from side to side between a & b (perpindicular to the arrow). I want it to be about 4 or so feet from a to b.images-2.jpg. I was wondering how to calculate how much liner I would need, how much water could be used, fish (goldfish, koi), and everything I might need to know. I am very lost, I have no clue what I need. I have lots of time though. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!

Building a pond is serious commitment but if you are willing to put out the labor and the $$$ the reward is awesome. First, look at your budget--try to build the biggest pond you can since you will be keeping fish (koi especially). Alot of people build pond and then very soon decide to build a bigger one. What you need:
1. Liner (45mil EPDM preferred but PVC is quite allright with underlayment)
2. At least 6Oz of Geolite underlayment to protect your liner
3. Bottom drain ( a must if you are going to keep kois)
4. Skimmer with UV light to provide mechanical filter and get rid of the green water commonly found in pond
5. Waterfall filter: Provide biological filtration and oxygen distribution
6. A good pump that cycle at least half the volume of your pond every hour.
7. An outside filtration system-(its recommended for easier maintainence)-bioforce usually carry good products
8. Rocks + plants+ fish-landscaping stuff
9. Cement and foam to build your waterfall
10. Water test kits + conditioner +biolift + etc...

So you're looking at about 1500-2000 dollars to build a pond about 1000 gallons- hope that helps!
