Aikido, is that a Pacu or a Piranha in with him?

How big is he? That con looks enormous!!! :)

AikidoGuy

thats a full grown Red Hook silver dollar its next to. The convict is just under 6" it hasnt gotten any bigger in quiet sometime. Not too common to see big convicts anymore :( He's just getting very thick and tall and he has developed a nice knot on his head. id imagine this guy will top out a 6" in another year or two maybe.

Wow...that's an impressive looking fish (actually, all three are!)

I'd never seen a 6" con before...Why has it become so uncommon to see big cons?

I have seen one convict that was 6 inches. At first glance, I thought it was a frontasa, bc I have never seen a convict that big.

Are those real plants?

How big is your tank?

AikidoGuy
05-15-2003, 3:57 PM
My guess would be weak genes these days?? whos gonna go and collect fresh wild convicts to recycle the gene pool...probably nobody.

AikidoGuy

fake plants. he did most of his growing in a 220gallon tank and is now in 150 with a jack dempsey and an Escondido. I may show this fish this year i havent decided yet.

ChilDawg

I guess that's true...and I don't see even the coolest of Cons being sold for high prices without a real Con job (Honduran Red Points as HRP Cichlids, etc., or without the buyer knowing the true meaning of what he or she is purchasing).

Maybe a couple of collecting trips and some infusing of the stock strain would be in order, but, in order to be truly cost-effective, I would guess that some other collections would have to be made at the same time, eh?

Hey, demon_surfer, sorry for the hijack, but two thoughts:

(a) I hope that this is interesting for you, too...

and (b) What goes around comes around!

I have a breeding pair of the sp. "Honduran red fins", its definitely a different fish.. well different race most likely. They are beautiful when in breeding color.

I wouldn't mind getting some of them, but I gotta start somewhere, and the Standards are a good place (especially because they're cheaper and hardier fish and I don't have to worry as much about moving them twice a year).

Here is a pic of my male convict. He is only 2.5 inches now, so not fully grown, but I thought I'd share the picture anyway.

I got this convict last September at just under 1". How long does it usually take before they approach the 4-5" mark and develop a nunchal hump?

i gotta hand it to you guys, those are two of the nicest looking convicts i have ever seen!

I've got a 3 inch Male convict that looks kinda like aikidoguy's male just not as large, I'll grab my girlfriends digital cam and get a pic up tomorrow, any volunteers to host for me?? I got my male in december of this past year and he was just shy of an inch, he's now 3 inchs and has had his hump for about a month now. Its still kinda small but definatly noticable, and his fins are past his tail and have seperated into like 3 sections at the tips. looks kinda mystical. I've kept him in a 29 gallon the entire time but he is about to be moved into my 150 gallon very soon.

its cool childawg, ill just mess up one of your threads *grin*

thats a nice looking con molino, but i believe it may be a female and not a male. I understand that the redness on the belly means a female thats "in the mood" if you know what i mean :D

hopefuly someone with more experience will agree or tell me to shut up :p

AikidoGuy
05-19-2003, 2:02 PM
nope looks male ;) when you put a male and female next to each other its pretty easy to tell one is the opposite sex for the other. females will always have a glittery orange colored pattern on the belly. males will not. other then venting them that is the best way to sex them.

my mistake :D

Molino

Yah, like AikidoGuy said he's definately a male. Here is another picture of him in a bad mood:

optix: have you got a pic of your convict yet, I'm sure any of us would be glad to host for you.

well its a toss up between a couple of them and a gorgeous tropheus dubious (sp??) for the 20 galloner. but the Tropheus is expenisive so i think im going to go with convicts =o

ChilDawg
05-19-2003, 3:12 PM
Take the Cons...Tropheus spp. need at least 25 gallons for a single specimen, and they really need to be kept in schools.

demon_surfer
05-19-2003, 3:19 PM
really? hmmmm ill have to look into it a bit more

ChilDawg
05-19-2003, 3:22 PM
By the by, Tropheus duboisi would be the spelling.

AikidoGuy
05-19-2003, 3:52 PM
tiger barbs and other fish like the tiger barbs have worked for me in the past.

caz
05-19-2003, 3:54 PM

ChilDawg
05-19-2003, 3:58 PM
Along the same lines, Barbus lateristriga, the Spanner Barb or T-Barb.

caz
05-19-2003, 4:11 PM

ChilDawg
05-19-2003, 4:16 PM
That's what I keep telling you in other threads! Go with the FMs, caz...you won't be sorry! :)

caz
05-19-2003, 5:16 PM
firemouths and cons are good together though? hehe sorry for keep asking the same question, but i want to be sure i get the right set up for me

dbcb314
05-19-2003, 5:18 PM
Go with the firemouth. They are cool fish. They are not real aggressive, but they can hold there own. My brother has one with his convict.

caz

Hey molino yeah Im anxious to get a pic up myself, but my friends lil sister just went on an 8th grade D.C trip and wont be back till friday and has the digital cam so I may use my mothers or just go ahead and buy my own. So I hope to have some up this week. Even though I also have to let his caudal fin heal because he was nipped pretty bad after introducing him to the 150 gallon by the Jack. So he is back in the 29 healing. soon as he heals and I get the cam, I'll get ahold of you, chilldawg or aikido to see if one of you guys will host for me :) oh and by the way, molino's is definatly a male

Here's a pic of my 4" male convict. I bought him when he was about 3" or so in Jan. 2003. I feed him a steady diet of Hikari Gold, bloodworms, and freeze dried krill. Other tank mates include a Jack Dempsey, Salvini, Green Terror, and a Texas all in a 60g tank.

  I bet the activity in that tank is....ummm.... interesting:confused:

ChilDawg

I was thinking the same thing...that tank is a little overstocked, as 60g is about the minimum for a single GT.

dragonfish

Surprisingly, all the fish get along quite peacefully! The convict is the king of the tank, but i had the salvini there first, so those two don't fight, and they actually share the same cave. The Jack Dempsey is bigger then the Convict, but bows down to him and the Salvini. The JD chases the texas around sometimes, but then when it goes into teh convict territory, it just gets scared back into his corner. The Texas minds its own business and the Green Terror is the smallest there and surprisingly doesn't get bothered by any other fish either. They've all been living together for about 4 months now and so far, so good. I read somewhere that if you keep the fish around eachother, starting around when they were juvies, they would get used to one-another and would grow up peacefully. That's what i'm hoping for.

ChilDawg
05-20-2003, 8:29 PM
We are hoping that that works...and, yes, I've read the same thing. I didn't realize that they were all growing up together.

Dragonfish, you may have to consider a larger tank if you want to keep all of them together throughout the rest of their lives, but it sounds like you've thought this through for the interim. I apologize for assuming the worst.

optix
05-20-2003, 8:32 PM
as the owner of all of those fish in the past or present except for the salvini, I give you about 5 to 6 more months before that 60 gallon becomes armageddon

dragonfish
05-20-2003, 8:35 PM
Yes I have given it a lot of thought and was carefull in chosing the right fish (ie. agressive enough to hold their own). I know that I would eventually need a much larger tank, maybe a 120 or 180, however much my budget allows sometime in the future. But for now, I'm going to make use of what I have at the moment.

optix
05-20-2003, 8:37 PM
if its working now it probably will for a few months but definatly have a bigger tank in the works :) And don't hold my word to it, it may not even last that long!! I just know my oscar and jack dempsey in a 55 lasted 4 months before I found the oscar dead. and the same for convicts with the jack, except the con wasn't dead, just beaten badly

well my mother took a couple lousy shots of my male con when she stopped by while I was out today but I do have some for now none the less until I can get my own cam and shoot my own shots. So if any of you guys still have space available to me pm me, I was wondering if anyone has something to get rid of the glare in his eye on two of the three pics??? My roommate told her I needed pics of him. He didn't tell her I needed the camera  pm me with info
