View Full Version : Water flow in bowl
I'm setting up a planted bowl with some snails. It will be filterless and heaterless.
I'm worried that without regular water flow, the water will get stagnant. Does anyone have any suggestions on ways to create a bit of flow?

How big is the bowl ? Maybe an air stone with a valve to adjust the bubbles.....
It's not the "globe" type, but instead it is cylindrical (large dinner plate size, about 4-5# high). I believe it holds 2 gal.
The airstone is something I had considered. I'm testing it out right now. At first it was too powerful, but I put a valve on it and it seems to be keeping the water moving.
I was still hoping to hear some other ideas, though.

a small screen as an undergravel and an airstone. it'll keep any crud in the tanl at the bottom and it'll move the water at a good pace.

kinda defeats the whole 'filterless' option, doesnt it? ;)
the plants and regular water changes should prevent the water from becoming stagnant as the bowl 'matures'.

air pump is your best bet without adding a filter.

sponge filter with an airstone or something. Maybe one of those really tiny HOB filters if it will fit on the bowl area.

I agree with the sponge filter idea. You can easily hide one of them under the gravel.
