Picture was taken with a Nikon D-100 outfitted with a 105mm macro lens. Light was provided by an SB-800 speedlight bounced off of a white reflector placed above the subject. ISO 200 f 5.6 and a 125 sec shutter.

This is a picture of my Oranda, Ingrid. She is so full of personality. I think she loves having her picture taken!
This shot was taken in natural light using my canon power shot SD500. I changed the settings several times trying to get good shots, so I am not sure what the settings were when I took it.

Specifics for the photograph

The photo was taken on a digital camera Kodak.. it's actually my work camera, not sure of the model but it was purchased recently so it's fairly new.. I just used the macro option on it to get a good close up.

The picture was taken in our Trigon 190, which we've had since January in it we have Live Rock and fish we have are two perc clowns, carpenter flasher wrasse, eibli angel and lemon peel angel, blue cheek goby, sailfin tang and an anthias, with two cleaner shrimp and a blood red shrimp.. we just started on some basic corals as well..

However our tank has just been taken apart due to white spot, so the fish are on their own in the trigon and the rock , corals and shrimp are in a seperate tank.

I hope to start a new log soon as we are upgrading to a Juwel 450 if the floor will take the weight! LOL.. so we have eight weeks to go and hopefully the white spot will have gone completely and we can start with the big one!! can't wait...

Specifics for the photograph


The image was taken with a Nikon D70s with overhead flash. The fish in question is a wild caught female Tropheus Moori Kasakalawe. The tank is a 5.5 foot 120 gallon tank that houses a colony of 20 breeding T. Kasakalawe and a small group of petrochromis. It is also worthy to note that out of 5 breeding tropheus groups, she is the only female to actually care for her young after initial release. She typically looks after them for about 10-14 days post release, taking them in her mouth at the slightest hint of danger. It is a very natural behaviour in the lake, but not often seen in aquaria, and quite difficult to capture with a camera. It literally took me about 75 hours of sitting quietly in front of the tank before she would release them in front of me.

It was during a period that the fish started getting sick and the tangs were bunching up together more than usual for some reason and I just happened to be there taking pictures when this little action packed scene went down.

Subject: Peacock Gudgeon (Tateurndina ocellicauda)

Origin: Papua New Guinea

Camera: Canon Powershot SD630 on manual mode. Piece of junk camera. I was shocked when this photo came out this well. Very light photoshop work, just some basic levels adjustment.

Tank: 20g long community

Comments: I got this breeding pair of peacock gudgeons about 2 months ago, and they have quickly become my favorite fish (if you couldn't tell from my hundreds of posts about them across the various boards of AC).

The peacock gudgeon is a spectacular addition to a community tank. They are fully freshwater, mind their own business, are not at all agressive unless someone pokes their nose in their spawning site, and are extremely eye-catching. They stay small at around 2.5 inches max size. The males develop nuchal humps as they mature.

I am currently raising fry from my pair's various spawns. I will be moving to a house in the next month, so hopefully I can set up an adequate breeding setup for them so that I can do this thing right. To breed them, feed frozen, meaty foods to condition them to spawn. They can be conditioned to eat staple flake, as well, though spawnings will be much fewer and far between.

A highly, highly, highly recommended fish!

I plan on setting up a biotope tank with other fish similar to the Peacock Gudgeon, like the Goo Obo and Purple Spot Gudgeons, as soon as I move into the new house. This type of fish as completely captivated me, and inspired me to set up a biotope to cater to their needs.

These are two of my mudskippers, Mel and Moko shortly after I introduced a third into their tank. I think that they weren't sure of what to make of the little guy. They are in a 20L brackish tank with half water and half sand. Moko has dug a burrow and she spends most of her time either in the burrow or in front of it, leading me to hope that she really is a female. She is quite a bit larger and has more of a grey coloring while the other two are brown with blue spots.
