You can, just not after it gets to 5-6 inches IMO.

Ya, 8" for yellows. So you gota lot of time before you need to upgrade, if you were to start with a 2-3" fish,

I'm going to chime in here, I know this will stir the pot LOL I have a 55 gal with both a blue hippo tang and a yellow tang for 2 years now but I always knew that I was going to upgrade and I have with a 180 gal. I bought mine out of impulse because of my kids and of course finding nemo lol, keep in mine that they need room and will stunt there growth but I do think you would be alright with the yellow tang for awhile. All I can say is do your homework and ask questions this site has helped me allot.

well with a 55 the door is pretty wide open you can do all but the largsest and fastest (in the case of the tang) fish you really want.
any of the "smaller" fish can be added within compatability's sake.
what r u looking for in this tank?

my suggestion is to have a plan of attack and research the products.. and have an idea of how your going to set it up

you can put whatever fish you want to get IMO, being:
1. Thats its in the juvi phase and
2. That it will have a proper home in the long run
3. know about compatibility with other fish/inverts/coral
other than that you should be fine.

Sorry I should more specific. I meant that you should have a bigger tank ready for when it is an adult.
Congratulations that you're getting the new tank! Sounds like you have some time to think about its inhabitants. I agree with the Tang advice- only in the 55G if it's temporary.
Sounds like you're going to get a good deal- glad your parents found it before buying the 30.

cant wait to see it up and going in the winter!
That's one of the best times to start it in my opinion. More apt to be indoors or stuck indoors.
You're from CT, you should know what I mean! :D

by blue do you mean REGAL TANG? You can get w/e you want just be prepared to either invest in a bigger tank or have plans for him to be transfered to suitible home when he outgrows his tank. I have plans for my Naso and Vlimingi if they get toooooooooo big then Im going to sell them to my LFS and get some $$$$$ for him :D But I have a looooooooong time for THAT to happen. Who knows I might just get a bigger tank.....MTS!!!

This may upset some people, but IMO it's irresponsible to put a fish that you know will outgrow a tank into that tank no mattr how big it is at the time. Most of the time even though there is a "plan" to upgrade it never happens. A fish such as a tang, no matter which one, needs a tank much bigger than 55g and by putting one in a tank that size is limiting their quality of life. Why get a fish that you know you will have to get rid of eventually, have it die, or have other problems related to being in a confined space when there are hundreds of other cool fish out there better suited to a smaller tank? Just my .02$ but thats how i feel.

Yeah I agree too. Think about it like a person in a box he can barely fit in. when he can fit in it anymore he gets a larger box. Doesn't really make sense:rolleyes:
