:help: I was given this fish from friend who moved away.
Has become the family's favorite !
It had a mate but died before I got them.:(
I posted same Question in general freshwater,
they seem to think it is male.....
Would be hard to buy many fish to find mate at this size.(8"+...no tail)
Any Ideas would be helpful.
Thanks

It looks like a male to me. I've kept both Midas and RD... it really does look like a Midas, but if its 8+" and a male... chances are it is a RD. Male Midas develop the infamous nuchal hump..

It is a parrot cichlid. My wife has 5 in her fresh water tank and there hybrids.
Most fish books won't list them as this kind of hybryidation is usually frowned upon.

your fish are too young to show bump on head.
nice fish:dance2:

Mine seems to have small bump but most large males I see
have large bumps.making it easy to sex them.
Telling sex by fin shape is beyond me.:(

Hello.....I have the exact type of fish that I just currently obtained thru freecycle. So is my Jolie a boy or a girl can anyone tell????? (S)he is in my pic???? They change darkness of color when stressed or breeding.
Check your water first.
Is a new fish......might need to adjust to your water.
some illness shows through fish moving up and down tank or
bouncing of bottom / sides of tank.:read:
nice fish.

I still think its a male. Look at the finnage... Not all RD develop a nuchal hump at that size either.. I have an 8" one without a hump that was also clearly a female.

With labiatus (and most CA cichlids) the finnage has nothing to do with the sex...both male AND female will grow long flowing fins.
The only real way is to look at its anal hole...the male (as you can see in the first pic) has a long, pronounced and 'sharp' (pointy) apendage. The female's is rounded.
If its pointy its a he.
Looking closely at the pics, yours seems to be a mix. It has the beak and colouration of a Parrot/Midas cross. But looks to be mostly RD.
ddyerfamily: They are about 2 1/2 to 3 years old
In a big enough tank they will get that big in about a year (from fry).
the next 6"'s of growth is a bit slower...but again given enough room and food they will power along.
Fry...tons...I call em my 'big blonde convicts'
He's always ready to rocknroll...as soon as I syphon out the fry he's digging the nest and pushing her into it...He's a bit of a wife basher, so when I had them in 4' together I seperated them with a piece of eggcrategrille. Untill she was aok again. Now they are in a 6' with others so he doesnt beat on her. He's busy being nice as my wifes Golden FlowerHorn has taken a liking to her and trys to entice her away all the time.
Ill get the camera out 2night and post some more pics.

I wish Richo you were closer.I would love to see your fish and tanks !
I read that hybrids were infertile ?
Anyway to really know if mine is hybrid ?
I thought about breeding (I love the solid pink color)
Leaves questions like -
breed RD to RD or RD to midas ?
Don't want bad/non-pure arguements,please public.
I am not pro breeder just hobby w/the kids.
I have plenty tank space,365 gal. total

I was going to say male at first, but the fourth picture down makes me want to say it's a well-conditioned female because the dorsal is more squared-off instead of pointed even though it has nice streamers.

I think my RD is starting to show a nochal hump on head ?
I am starting to feel it's a MALE.
See what you all think.......
Also is now so aggressive I CAN NOT put my hands in tank !
It is bulling the others......pair adult Convicts(w/1 day old fry) and
2 plecos 7-8" and 12+"
I am going crazy......replanting my plants daily !
It chases my hand whole time.

It HURTS when a Large RD hits you full speed !!!!!!!!!:rant2:
