Just wanted to let everyone know about an unfortunate experience I've had with a silk hairgrass decoration in my aquarium. Last year, I had, among others, two male Emperor Tetras. They were pretty competitive and were constantly chasing each other around. Well, one day, I noticed something odd looking as I glanced at the tank, and when I got closer, I saw that one of these guys was impaled on a strand of the artificial hairgrass. It went in through the mouth and out through the gills. I used a net to push him off the plant, but his rival had taken the opportunity to do some additional damage to him and he died shortly afterward. Figuring this was a fluke, and also figuring that with only one male Emperor left the aggression level in the tank would die down, I did not remove the plant. Well, yesterday I came home from work and was extremely surprised to find that the remaining male Emperor was impaled on this plant in exactly the same way. I immediately pushed him off the plant and removed it from the tank. This morning, the fish was still alive, although there's some blood evident under his jaw and I'm not sure yet whether he's really back to normal, as he didn't seem interested in his morning feeding. Anyway, just a note of caution to everyone: if a decoration looks pointy and dangerous, think twice before you put it in your tank.
