I haven't had my two tangs long and I wont to keep them happy but I think I may be over feeding them.I feed them some flakes or brine shrimp in the morning around 11 along with a piece of folded green marine algae or seaweed selects.Alot of the seaweed and algea gets torn off and goes through out the tank and in to the sump.If my silly turbo snails find the clip they eat from it as well..I do that again at about 8 that evening..There is alot of algae and seaweed waste. So am I over feeding? Is this normal?
Second question I noticed last night that my sailfin tang looked like he had some little white spots on his tail fin and side fins but not his body. The other tang and the cardinals were fine.Well the spots sent a panic through me but there was nothing I could do till today. When I woke this morning he hasn't got a spot on him,I went out and got garlic anyhow just to keep them healthy I bought the liquid but my LFS stores said for me to also go to the grocery store and get wet minced garlic in the spice isle and either give them some or mix it with there food.So I bought some of that and added a pinch to the tank and they went wild over it.How often should I feed them garlic, would you mix it with there food or give it to them like I did today?

What I do is thaw krill, mysis, and brine in a small bowl(thaw with tank water) drain it. Add 2 drops of Garlic extreme, mix it up and let sit for 1/2hr then feed. As for the seaweed on a clip, for my cowfish and anything else that wants to eat it we only place a piece about 1"x1" every two days. Tangs are grazers so I wouldn't worry too much about the algae aspect of there diet cause they will pick at your rock and glass. Sorry I have no tang experience this is just what I've come accross in research...
Hope this helped...

I add my garlic to my food mix which is
1 cube of mysis
1 cube of brine
1 cube of marine cuisine
1 cube of marine mix
1 cube of artemia
I defrost the above in plain R/O water and drain it through a coffee filter, whilst that's draining I liquidise some Gamma fish, mussel and 1 sheet of dried algae. I then mix the whole lot together with some more R/O water (and the garlic) in an old mayonnaise squirty bottle and store it in the fridge. It lasts about 2 weeks and i just give them a squirt in the mornings. I put a piece of algae in the clip every day if it's empty but I never replce the same day.
Hope this gives you an idea:dance2:
PS : My tank mates are 2 x bangai cardinals, 1 yellow Tang, 1 lawnmower blenny, 1 maroon clown, 1 cleaner wrasse, 1 goby and a mixture of hermits and snails. All have been fed and living like this for nearly three years now and I've never had any signs of disease (hope I haven't just jinxed myself!!)

Thanks..I am sooo over feeding..lol.I knew I was but I have a bad tendency to over feed.I do it on my freshwater tank as well, musyt be why my quarter size silver dollars are bigger than my fist now and I have only had them to months..lol..I made up some fish food and put it in a tarter sauce bottle..Maybe that bottle wasn't a good choice.lol..I will give them 1 squirt in the morning along with the algea and thats it...Thank you so much

Whilst they're not eating food you put in, don't forget they're always be pecking at the rock looking for goodies, especially your tang!

I feed my three tangs one cube of formula variety pack with a drop of Garlic Extreme. Then I dont feed again till late in the even, either brine shrimp w/ garlic or "people" food ( w/no garlic), I have given them peas and romaine lettuce so far and they have eaten EVERYTHING. Tangs (well at least mine) LOVE peas!!! For bedtime I drop 2 pieces of seaweed/algae sheets about 2X2 one on each clip (on opposite sides of the tank w/ Garlic) and by the time I wake up around 6AM there is no more algae sheets. So far they are healthy and really active,it has gotten to the point where the tangs eat out of my hands :D (along with other fish)
Dropping garlic into the water is something to do with fish who arent eating well or at all. I dont really do it since all my fish are eating and seem healthy. But after reading all these post I migh just try doing some mixes in a bottle. I have some bloodworms do you think that sw fish would enjoy those as well??

I must admit I'd never heard of using garlic until I found AC. I now think preventive is as good as cure so use it just to help build up their immune systems!!!

Well I have them sitting in my fridge I figure Id toss them in the mix But I wasnt sure thats why I asked. My FW love them. I used to have 2 ducks at one point and they loved them as well they would swallow a hole cube like it was nothing. :) I miss my ducks :(

Although bloodworms are eaten by sw fish, you have to remember there is no nutritional value in it to be worthwhile. A treat of bloodworms is fine, but, not as a staple.

I have never heard of using garlic on fish food myself till I joined this board. But after seeing the benefits first hand and seeing how much my fresh and saltwater fish love it.I will always use it.I am using the mix that I made on both tanks I figure if it is good for the saltwater it has to be good for the freshwater.
I have a bad tendency to over feed and that is what I am trying to avoid with the saltwater,I am getting better at it with the freshwater but I hate to think they are hungry,.

try out garlic guard...its much cheaper than the kent stuff and works better IMO. i feed frozen blood worms to my fish.
morning meal: bloodworms, and sperilina brine, and red algae on clip
evening meal: angel formula, enriched brine, mysis, and green or brown algae on clip.
its all thawed and rinsed first then added to a cup of tank water to marinate in selcon, zoe marine ,or garlic and then feed to the fish.
