I wondered the same thing and thoght the ph rollercoster wouldent be good.
the cost over a year would buy a small pressurised injection set.

I just tried them for the hell of it setting up a new 10 gallon planted tank, and **** if they didn't actually work. My plants grew in better then my other tanks. I got brave and tried them in my 29 gallon (3wpg CF 6500k ,DIY co2 injection, laterite and gravel substrate, flourish excel fert), and **** if they didn't grow almost 25% larger in a week. When I stopped using them to see if it was the tabs or something else the plant growth slowed too, so I'm not sure whats in them but they do work. Could be the extra CO2 from the reaction was helping my plants, I get a little nervous cranking up the CO2 in my tank sometimes.

I tried these in my 20gal tank for a couple weeks, and didn't see any appreciably greater growth rate with or without them. What I did find it is that they increased my water hardness considerably.
