I brought a tank 4 months ago 'my first tank'.
It come with an Under Gravel filter at the time I didn't know it was a bad thing.
Now I'm having problems with phosphate which I've been told is from a build up of gunk under the plates.
My LFS have recommended me to change my filter system.
I don't really want to get a external hang on filter I don't like the look of them, and a full external encased jobby might be a little over the top for my 65L.
So I'm thinking of an internal filter, anyone have any recommendations or tips or is this even a good filter type to use.

Also any advice to removing an UGF would be fantastic. I'm a little worried that while removing the UGF it might mess with my Ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrate which at the moment is 0/0/20. Will it cause a mini cycle? I won't remove any gravel just vaccum under the plates before removing them.

Thanks for any advice

well, if youre willing to completely upset the biological filtration and muck up your water for a while (i wouldnt do this unless you were doing a fishless cycle) you could convert to a RUGF and have a HOB.

A HOB? Hang on Back. Could I use an internal one rather than a HOB.
I thought about turning it into an RUGF would that get the muck out or do I still need to clean under the plates?

I have 2 plates to my UGF maybe I could remove them one at a time a few weeks apart to allow my biological filtration system to settle back down before removing the other plate.

get a internal filter if you want to i have never used one but you need something else in there and i would also switch to RUGF... i dont think you should take out your UGF and clean it because it will be a HUGE pain to do

I would get you new filter on and running for 2-3 weeks before doing anything. I also second turning it into a RUGF.

I would leave it run first, then switch to RUGF. Have extra floss available and do an extensive gravel vac before the switch, since you will blow some debri into the water column.
