I need to change my cleaning schedule due to physical limitations combined with water supply/tank location. I will use 1 tank as an example.
The 52g (currently Malawi) I was thinking how much easier it would be on me physically if I could to do a 4g or so water change every other day.
*is this possible long term without a direct negative effect on the fish?
*if so, how often should water tests be done?
*if this will not work then can someone please give me a schedule that is
smaller ammounts of water more often?
Thank you in advance for any help.

Thats about a 5% change, which is better than nothing, if you are unable to do bigger pwc's, a bunch of small ones will have to do,, your water paramiters will tell you how mutch of a change and when,,, are you able to vac the gravel and do normal maintenance ? ...........:dance2:

Yes the regular maintence is not a problem. The physical limitations come into play when I need to get the water back into the tank. I can syphon/vacuum (2 tanks) and the water goes directly out a nearby window, that's the easy part. Returning treated water to the tanks is when I run into problems.
4g increments seems to be the easiest for me to handle so I will mark my tank at the 8g mark and make 2 trips back to the tank with the treated water. Does that put me in a better situation with tank cleaning/maintence? If so I will apply the same %'s to the other tank and just accept the fact that these will be my only 2tanks for quite awhile :(

Yep as long as the water parm's are good small pwc's will work, i vac ours about once a week and in doing that i end up doing about a 30% wc..are you able to hook up some kind of hose to the faucet so you could fill both tanks, but what ever works for you, it sounds like you have a good wc plan.....:dance2:

dont you need to treat the water before you put it into the tank?

Yes you do, have you been doing that,? use a good water conditioner like Prime and add it to the pails of water or water flow {if its being filled via a hose} when you refill.....

Isn't 4g / 52g = 7.7 %?

Assuming 3 changes a week:
change 1 = 7.7%
change 2 = 7.1%
change 3 = 6.5%
Total of 21 % a week?

Looks good to me, my estimation was aprox.. takeing into consideration the content's of the aqu. { plants, rock, driftwood, gravel,} the over all volume will be less, if someone has a 20 gal. once setup it won't hold 20 gals, of water,.....

:)

Yes I do need to treat my water and that is why I can not hook up a hose and have to resort to "lugging" it into the next room. My bucket has wheels and I can scoop the treated water from that into the tank. I guess I am looking for the best results with the least ammount of physical stress on them and me.
I am going to try 6-8g every other day and see how that goes. If that does not go well then I will just offer to cook dinner for my kids if they come over twice a week for tank maintence!!
